350 on the Streets

Following the success of RUN350, a group of nEbO activists joined “350 on the streets” on 22nd May 2010.

Soh Shi Nan, Chung Cheng High School (Yishun):

“Save Mother Earth! Do your part!” As cliché as it sounds, seldom do people really do their part to stop global warming, and save our Earth for future generations. Therefore, I decided to embark on “350 On The Streets”, down Orchard Road to spread the message of being eco-friendly.

I first got to know about the 350 initiative when I stumbled upon the Run 350 Facebook page. 350 was actually a pivotal figure that depicts the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Subsequently, I was introduced to the “350 on the Streets” event, which I obliged.

Together with Mr Gary Peh, my running companion and my fellow schoolmates, we headed down to Singapore’s premier shopping heaven, Orchard Road. The main objective was to spread the eco friendly initiative. As it was the first time I was doing this, pounds of courage had to be mustered to engage passersbys. I engaged the passersby by greeting them with utmost courtesy and explaining the 350 initiative. Many passersbys were willing to spend some time to learn more about the initiative and snapshots were collected.

Through “350 on the streets”, I felt that the message of being environmental friendly and to do our part to save the Earth has been successfully spread across. I’ve learnt that we must not sit on our buttocks and do nothing about climate change. Mother Earth needs to be rescued for future generations, by bring down CO2 levels. Every single effort counts. Together, we can make a difference.

RUN 350 was an event organised by Young NTUC, co-organised by nEbO. The event allowed Young NTUC members and nEbOians to do something for Singapore and the world. Environmental consciousness is important to youths and Run 350 was the first programme of this scale supporting this consciousness. In support of the global 350 movement, it aimed to raise awareness that the sustainable upper safety limit of atmospheric CO2 is believed to be 350 ppm (parts per million). This now stands at 391.06 ppm. Run 350 was successfully held at Pulau Ubin on 20 March, reaching out to more than 1000 participants. All proceeds went to Garden City Fund’s Plant-A-Tree (PAT) programme.
